Belarusian oppositionist Sergei Tikhanovsky who is in jail – spouse of former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya – a new, third in a row, charges were brought against them, this time of inciting social hatred. This is reported by Tut.by with reference to the lawyer of Tikhanovsky.
The charge was brought shortly before the expiration of six months from the date of Tikhanovsky’s detention. According to the law, he had to change the measure of restraint or send the case to court. However, the new charge allows him to be detained for up to 18 months without trial. According to the lawyer, Tikhanovsky "extremely outraged" new accusation.
In total, Tikhanovsky is now accused under three articles: organizing actions that grossly violate public order (according to which he was detained in Grodno on May 29), obstruction of the work of the Central Election Commission and now – incitement to hatred.
Tikhanovsky is in a pre-trial detention center in the city of Zhodino in a solitary confinement cell. He recently took part in a meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka, which was held in the KGB pre-trial detention center of Belarus in Minsk. After the meeting, several political prisoners were released, but Tikhanovsky, like the former presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, remained behind bars.
Sergei Tikhanovsky has gained popularity in recent years as a blogger, the author of the YouTube channel opposition to Alexander Lukashenko "Country for life". He intended to run for president of Belarus, but he was denied registration. After that, his wife Svetlana, previously practically unknown to the general public, was nominated for the presidency. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was admitted to the elections, and many opponents of Lukashenko rallied around her candidacy. After the elections and the beginning of mass protests against the falsifications, she left the country under pressure from the authorities. Tikhanovskaya claims to be a legitimate representative of the Belarusian people, she meets with foreign leaders to persuade them to increase pressure on the Lukashenka regime. She is wanted in Belarus.
